Upcoming staff changes at ELP | A clear road forward

The coming weeks will see some big changes in the ELP office and the team is excited to see how these shifts will see ELP programs and initiatives go from strength-to-strength.

Liandra Gaykamangu takes on new Executive Director role

Previously the Co-CEO of ELP, Liandra has now stepped into an Executive Director role. A strong leader and passionate about the impact of ELP in remote communities in North Australia, Liandra also runs her own business, Liandra Swim, which is growing exponentially.

“Being a part of the ELP leadership team has been just as empowering for me as for the people we support on our programs. By moving into this new role, I can focus on my business while continuing to support my community through ELP.”

The growth of Liandra Swim has seen a significant increase in opportunities and demand for her time. Just this past month, she made her way to Milan with her niece, Tarlisa Gaykamangu, the first Aboriginal model to walk f during Milan Fashion Week – this opportunity is just one in a long list as she continues to make waves in the fashion industry.

“This is what happens when you open up doors. Not only was this Tarlisa’s first Italian runway show, it was her first runway show full stop. I’m inspired to keep finding ways for my community to access new opportunities and to demonstrate what we’re capable of when we invest in each other.”

In her new role as Executive Director Liandra remains engaged in organisational strategy and cultural advisory, supporting the whole team as well as being available to each of the entrepreneurs who come through ELP’s doors. She is also excited to continue supporting via her personal networks, working with many different entrepreneurs and helping them connect with one another to thrive.

“During her time as co-CEO Liandra has made an incredible mark on the organisation.” Alexie Seller (CEO) says. “I have learned so much from her perspective and passion. We look forward to continuing to work together with a new approach that ensures Liandra can continue to invest in her own business’ growth while providing crucial advisory and mentorship to the ELP team.”

Alexie Seller taking maternity leave

Mid-March will see Alexie taking a break as she prepares to welcome a new baby! Alexie recognises that with both Co-CEOs taking different routes for now, it may seem like a big shake up, but she’s confident that the framework is in place for ELP to continue thriving.

In past years, Alexie and Liandra have been the core ELP leadership and delivery team in the NT, but that’s no longer the case. Now there are program managers, community managers, business trainees, and more. ELP has built out the delivery of programs and services and there are great plans on the horizon.

“There’s such strength and capability and clarity for everyone as to where they’re going, there are plans in place to support Liandra and I as we navigate these changes,” she says.

“Our team has been remarkable during this process, taking ownership of the change and ensuring that they are confident in their roles. We’re also very grateful to our board and funders, who have been willing to understand and work through this period together with us. Without committed, long-term funding, leaders of small organisations like ours can’t make the pivots that we need to to remain relevant and sustainable – whether it’s starting a family or growing a business – it’s refreshing to work with people who understand the balance between your external life and your organisational life … it’s worth considering the whole picture.”

“I understand that it feels risky to fund a team through transitions like these, but it’s also risky to force leaders to hang on for dear life when actually they need to shift things or take a break.”

ELP welcomes a new General Manager

A great example of ELP’s strong team is found in Andrea Smith, ELP’s new General Manager. Starting in early March, she brings a wealth of experience with remote businesses in the NT, including consulting and coaching for Aboriginal businesses, plus she has a strong background in leadership, HR and management.

The whole ELP team is excited to welcome Andrea to the team, and you’ll hear more from Andrea in our coming updates.

If you have any questions about the staff changes at ELP over the next few weeks, please feel free to get in touch with us at hello@elp.org.au and we’re happy to talk to you further!
